Michelle Wells, a concerned mother stated: “ I’m the one that needs to reduce my kids calories or fat, not the government. The government controls enough.” The Healthy Hunger-Free kids act created by the government is not helpful to students in the United States because of it’s high cost, but low benefits.
Most school athletes spend hours after school and before, exercising and preparing for sports games and competitions. With all the calories being burned, athletes usually have bigger appetites, and need more calories, fats, and other nutrients to have their bodies function properly. Eating healthy foods, hydrating often, and other healthy behaviors are proven to lead to a longer, healthier life. But this has never been a requirement or law until now. Child obesity is a large and impeding problem in America especially, and the government has come with a “solution” to the problem. If we force them to eat healthy, obesity and unhealthy eating evaporates, right? No. How parents/guardians decide to feed their children is a personal decision, and should not be decided by the government. And all healthy eating starts with the basics- education. Teaching kids about why/how eating healthy is helpful to their lives is much more crucial to their lives than being force fed these foods at school. Kids are going to continue unhealthy eating habits until they know how this will affect their life. On weekends, or once they are out of school, bad eating habits will continue unless they are eating healthy at home, or if they know the benefits of healthy. If they are not eating certain healthy foods at home, when they get to school, they won't be willing to try those foods (Christensen). It’s how healthy foods are implemented in their lives at home,or with explanations on the food that will be most beneficial to all
