Who doesn’t love recess? You can do whatever is your heart’s desire- tag, ponies, hopscotch, or basketball, but imagine if that was all taken away and replaced with more tests and schoolwork. Recess is arguably the most important part of a child’s school day because of its many benefits to their growth educationally, physically, emotionally, and socially. However, many schools around the country are beginning to ban this break in order to squeeze in more learning time.

Contrary to popular belief, children actually learn and comprehend more when given unstructured breaks. It is proven that when given these breaks, such as recess, it allows kids to retain more information as well as clear their mind to take in new knowledge. It is also proven that unstructured play helps kids manage stress as well as become more resilient. Additionally, many doctors explain other advantages- "We know that many disadvantaged children are not free to roam their neighborhoods, even their own yards, unless they are with an adult,” says Dr. Barros, “Recess may be the only opportunity for these kids to get fresh air and clear their minds" (Michael Heller, Daily School Recess Improves Classroom Behavior, einstein.yu.edu). However, many researchers and doctors believe that with just 60 minutes a day, we can eliminate obesity in children. Unquestionably, recess can play a tremendous part in the hour of play and exercise. Recess makes it more convenient so kids don’t have to go far from home and also it makes the time more fun when doing it with friends.
