The part of Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504 was civil rights law introduced to prohibit discrimination based upon disability. This law would give equal rights to participate in programs, have access to programs, receive benefits and services for individuals with disabilities.
2) What happened April 1, 1977? How many days were people there?
On April 1, 1977, the organizers began reaching out to the people, asking them to contact and call others in order to take action and join the upcoming protest that began on April 5, 1977. People were there for 26 days protesting and occupying federal building in San Francisco.
3) What did the “protestors” want?
The protestors wanted Section 504 to take into effect and demanded that Joseph Califano, U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare signs the law so that people get civil rights under Section 504. Section 504 was the part of Rehabilitation Act of 1973 which made it illegal to discriminate people based on their disability. However, since the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare refused to sign it, people had to protest demanding that they pass the Section 504.
