The authors state, “Indeed, there are many well-paid job openings going unfilled because employers can’t find workers with the right skills - skills that young potential workers could learn from training programs, apprenticeships, a vocational certificate, or an associate’s degree” (Sawhill & Owens). Students can take advantage of these opportunities for career pathways by getting specific vocational training and learning skills needed for many jobs that do not require a bachelor's degree or advanced education. Community college graduates have the potential to do very well in the labor market. Student Growth and Development Typically, universities provide many options for students when it comes to vocational programs and activities. Many opportunities are found for growth and magnification of students’ abilities. However, community colleges can offer these programs and other forms of student life that are beneficial to individual growth. With statistics like these, it can be seen why community colleges would be a beneficial option, but not enough students have access to these programs in a variety of situations, so more needs to be done to improve the outcomes in these institutions. Conclusion: In general, community colleges can be a great resource for students to earn their degrees. Many students who receive their education will do very well in the job market and have very successful future careers. The community college system as a whole is beneficial as well. It has been stated that “community colleges contribute $809 billion to the US economy each year” (Zauderer). With the increase in popularity of local institutions, more information is coming out about opportunities for these students. The evidence is not conclusive about the future of community college students and the impact that these community schools will have on society. Going to these students and schools directly is the best method. We still have a lot that we can learn about this student population.
