High school students, on average, get about 7 hours of sleep each night. Getting the right amount of sleep is vital in a busy student life, and “Most teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. (Gavin)” Starting school after 9 in the morning or at least later than they do now, could show “.significant improvements in school performance. (5 Pros and Cons)” Starting school later will mean later dismissal times and students are already used to the early bell, but academics, attendance, and focus will all increase across the board. There are good and bad aspects about school starting later. Plenty of students would love to have school start later, so they can sleep in and not need to wake up so early in the morning. Students are also currently used to the early bell, so it may be a hard transition for some. Starting later gives less time to do homework, study, and spend time with family. This would cause stress for the family involved, putting tension on their relationship with their children. This could also create the stress of not having enough time to do other tasks, such as homework and thoroughly studying and comprehending their work. So, this could potentially decrease the student’s academic standing as well. With the later start times, this could affect how sports teams perform. Some students tend to have after-school jobs or activities to do after school at certain times, which would be affected by later start times. Starting later could cause student safety issues going to and from school. This is due to the fact that parents still need to work, so they may decide that their kids will have to walk to school. So, with more kids potentially walking to school, this poses a danger in itself. So, starting school later can be a disadvantage as well.
