Every year, humans fill the oceans with 12 million tons of plastic waste. Much of this waste is plastic bottles. Most people would say the consumption of commercially bottled water should not be stopped because of the convenience they provide. Consumption of commercially bottled water should be stopped or limited because of bottled water companies lacking moral values, selling tap water and there are better alternatives that benefit the health of consumers and the environment.
Commercially bottled water is the pre packaged bottles of water that consumers purchase from companies that make a profit from selling the water. These companies include Ice Mountain, Dasani, Aquafina etc. Tap water is the city or town water that people get from their local government to their kitchen sink. The debate of bottled water or tap water began in the 90’s when BPA was found to be coming from plastic containers. It's important to note that the federal government does not require bottled water to be safer than tap. In fact, just the opposite is true in many cases. Tap water in most big cities must be disinfected, filtered to remove pathogens, and tested for cryptosporidium and giardia viruses. Bottled water does not have to be.
One could buy a reusable bottle for the same price as a case of water and refill it with tap water every time they need to drink. Chances are it will be, at the very least, as healthy as bottled water. To take it a step further, one could buy a self filtering water bottle for the price of two cases of water. These bottles will filter your tap water even further, almost ensuring it is more pure and healthy than pre bottled
