Charles Darnay has been accused of treason against his home country of England and conspiring against the crown in conjunction with the French and Americans. The trial was open to the public and welcomed a bloodthirsty crowd hoping to see yet another spy hung for their despicable actions.
The two hostile witnesses include John Barsad and Roger Cly. A witness of the trial explained how Barsad stuck to the Attorney General’s story. “The story of his …show more content…
Stryver then went through a series of questionings asking Barsad simple questions as to where he lived and what he had inherited. Barsad was very defensive and sarcastic in his answers and wanted no part in the trial, it seemed. The next witness, Roger Cly, was called up for questioning. He was also defensive in the same manner as Barsad.
The key piece of testimony against Darnay was that he was scene outside a hotel waiting for someone. This would have been enough to convict Darnay, but there was a breakthrough in the case.
Sydney Carton, a spectator to the case, looked almost exactly like the accused Darnay. This was the turning point of the case and Darnay was soon proven innocent. About an hour and a half after this breakthrough in the case the jury returned with a final verdict. They said that Darnay was innocent and cleared of all charges against him. The jury was then sent out of the room to decide the fate of the accused Darnay.
Darnay had this to say after he was found innocent: “If you had sent the message, “Recalled to Life,’ again I should have known what you meant, this time.” Obviously relieved, he left the scene with a renewed sense of confidence and
