In The Giver everything is different, they have to speak perfectly, they are assigned jobs, kids, and spouses. It seems almost perfect, but in the end it was not. The society in The Giver has very few similarities to our society, and but there is many differences that set the two apart such as their rules, their family, and their leaders.
The rules for Jonas’ society is extremely different than ours, such as we call them laws and they call them rules. In the Giver they have to speak correctly or they will get chastised or punished like when Jonas’ friend Asher was younger he said he wanted a “smack”, not a snack and he was punished by getting slapped on the hands with what they call a “punishment wand”.(Lowry 55) It's very common for kids that young to not speak right and usually they only get corrected in our society. In the Giver they also have to take medicine in order to not have feelings like love, happiness, or anger.(Lowry 38) However in our society today we have the ability to have feelings. In the Giver people sign up for husbands, wives, and even kids. The parents do not even have kids, there is a job title called “Birthmothers” and they only have three kids then they are forced to be laborers and they have to do the hard work. (Lowry 22) The families in the Giver are called family units, there is one father, one mother, one male child, and one female child. (Lowry 8) That is very different in our society today, we do not get assigned spouses, we get to choose who we are in love with.
