Smarter Balance Test Analysis

We could not imagine taking the Smarter Balance Test as a basic skills test as a student without being prepared for it by our teachers. The practice test allowed each of us to see what our students will go through when taking this exam. Many differences in this test present themselves compared to other standardized tests each of us took during our K-12 education. Any test like this will affect each of us as teachers through our students; we can even be left with pondering questions students ask about the exam. As a future teacher, the Smarter Balance Test concerns me. Teachers feel like they need to prepare the students for this exam, so they will need to look more closely at the reading and writing standards associated with the students’ age group. It will also take away from the time students will be able to be in my classroom. This could result in fewer topics being discussed in my class, or I will have to cut my lessons short. Part of my job too, will be to help students who struggle with test anxiety. Most students would say they do not care for exams, or they have a hard time taking exams. We feel that giving students the choice to work on the assessment as long as they want could extend time the by triple. Students should have a time limit, but an extended time should be offered. This leads to our question about time. Even though the Smarter Balanced Assessment is not timed, are the students cut off once they have reached a certain amount of time? The other question we have is how are the exams graded when every student will have different sets questions because the exam changes to accommodate the
