Social Work Career Analysis

A career in social work can be a very rewarding job. It is important to be able identify the educational requirements, the outlook, and the projected salary for a career in social work. In doing this will give someone a perspective on how to become a social worker, what the job may look like, and an idea of an expected salary rate. According to NASW (2015) “To become a social worker, one must have a degree in social work from a college or university program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.” The minimum educational requirement to become a social worker in Mississippi is a Bachelor’s Degree. Careers In Psychology (2015) states, “Upon graduating from an accredited BSW program, individuals may take the state-level examination to become a Licensed Social Worker.” After completing the licensure exam then no other filed experience is required, although the individuals must have a fingerprint background check and a sex offender registry check. According to salary.com (2015), ” People who perform the job of a Social Worker (BSW) in Tupelo, Ms, they are expected to make less than the median of 40,296.” The salary rate is expected to differ in the different ares of social work. Social Work License Map states, “The salary increases from BSW to MSW by $9,000 and the lowest area paid is Child, Family and School Social Workers with an average of $34,190.” However, NASW study shows an average increase of $15,000 for those who have completed their Master of Social Work compared to those who just completed an undergraduate program.
