Successful in Sonography
Becoming a new parent seems to be a very exciting experience, from the time you see the first positive test, the ultrasounds and the time you see the baby’s face for the first time. Well, my major consists of Medical Diagnostic Sonography, which is ultrasonic imaging that produces 2D and 3D body images. Though there are many areas of experience with this major, my main goal is to become an Obstetric Sonographer. This is ultrasounds of pregnant females and their fetus. There are many areas to consider when finding your perfect career: the historic background, the education needed, the salary, and most importantly the reason why you chose

In the early times of Sonography, it was mainly tested on animals trying to figure out how to understand it. As time passed they started using more advanced ways to do sonography on the brain and various parts of the body. According to Beth W. Orenstein, “Most consider French physicist Pierre Curie’s discovery of piezoelectricity in 1877 to be the moment that ultrasound was conceived, thirty-five years later, sonographic imaging was developed by French professor and physicist Paul Langevin” (Orenstein, 2008). Stating this, it has always been fascinating to me how people have become smarter and any form of science or machinery has changed and become so much greater over the years. Without any technological advancement we would not be where we are today and we would not be able to determine as much as we have when it comes to the health field or diagnoses. Orenstein also states that, “Once sonography was a recognized occupation, its educational requirements needed to be defined. In 1974, a committee was formed to write the Document of Essentials, it took five years to get an agreement. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography was founded in 1979” …show more content…
Since the only College I will be attending is Greenville Technical College I have decided to use their educational requirements to be the education I will focus on to get my Associates in this major. According to Greenville Technical College, to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer there will be two phases to complete. In Phase I, which is the basic courses to get into the actual Medical Sonography program, a student would have to take English Composition I, Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, a speech course, a physics course, a computer course, and a mathematics course. During Phase II a student will successfully be beginning the actual program of Medical Sonography. In this Phase the courses to be taken are: Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation, Sonographic Anatomy of the Abdomen, Gynecology, 164 Introduction to Clinical Education, Patient Care for Sonography, Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation, Abdominal Ultrasound, Embryology and First Trimester Ultrasound, Clinical Education II, Advanced Clinical Education, Seminars in Sonography, and last OB/GYN Sonography II. All of these courses combined are a total of 83 credits. With Spring, Summer and Fall courses it would take approximately two years and one semester to complete this
