The Garcia’s mostly spoke Spanish when explaining the proper behavior to Josiah, so he would get a better understanding. I noticed it took all of them to make sure that Josiah’s behavior and his safety was top priority. The mall is an excited place to be, but can also be a danger zone for unwatched children, so the Garcia’s kept a close watch for Josiah and any person’s of contact.
Hispanic and Latin American cultures place a strong value on family. During my interview, I noticed that when the siblings or the parents would try to get Josiah’s attention that would speak the Spanish language. According to research, Hispanic families teach their children Spanish as a way of passing down their heritage and culture, I thought speaking in the Spanish language was used a as such a protective factor , so I would not understand what they were saying. Even though the family is fluent in speaking the English language, they still struggle to keep up with the other cultures. The Garcia’s challenges range from, miscommunication, discrimination, trust, high paying jobs, so both parents continue work and participate with their culture. The Garcia’s provides a loving, but private environment for their children. Maybe that is why they recommend spending time away from the home for the interview. To further add to this analysis about this family, Social Construction defines between the lines of how in depth a social worker is culturally competent and how well one is connected to the individual and the family.
