Introduction:
I want to start my paper off with the explanation of my selection process and the reason I interview the person that I have selected. This person does not work for a non-profit organization but she does work with children in urban areas. When I was first given this assignment I had no idea who I could interview because I am new to the Houston area and I am still not fully familiar with the area or the resources that the city might have. This is referred to as the kinship care program with is a service provided by CPS (Child Protective Service). These caregivers provide children with stability and care when they can’t live with their birth parents. The kinship program provides help by offering the support the relative may need when adjusting to an additional family member moving in with them. If a child is seen to be in an abuse or neglected situation, DFPS (Department of Family and Protective Services) will remove the child from his or her homes to ensure immediate safety. Once removed the court system requires temporary placement with a relative and asks the parents to provide DFPS with contact information for relatives who may be able to at least temporarily care for the child. Kinship placement may identify as the most appropriate decision. Owens was asked would she encourage others to work in her position and her agency. Her response is “I would definitely encourage others to work for CPS. It is a great experience to have in the field of Social work. It gives you the opportunity to be an advocate, teacher, and listener to the community and work to enhance the betterment of children's lives. I would definitely encourage others to work for my position, because at the end of day I feel I have made a difference in some family's life and may have even saved a life. She also had advice for college students that are studying to pursue a career in field. She stated she would tell them “that it takes a special person to be a social worker. It takes a dedication and perseverance. To be a great social work it requires you to be a sociable, friendly, and lovable person who is not afraid to interact and meet new people daily. It's not a career for any and every one. Although the financial benefit of the job could be better, you eventually overlook the income barrier due to the joy you receive knowing you have saved a person's life, or guided them when they felt they may have been at their darkest and lowest point of their life. It’s the feeling that you get when you have made a difference in a family and have promoted relationships or a bond. It’s the feeling you receive, knowing you have boosted someone's confidence and helped them to realize their self-worth. The field of Social work is definitely one of a
