Hajj is one of the significant yearly occasions in the Islamic world. More than two million Muslims travel annually from all around the globe to the city of Mecca to perform their duty as Muslims. Lets back up a little, every religion has their own sacred and holy practices unique from other religions. Similarly, Islam also has many various practices and traditions that dates back during the times of Prophet Abraham and his son Ismail. However, some practices were officiated or were made obligatory during Prophet Mohammed’s time. I will illustrate the differences between traditional Hajj practices performed during the Abrahamic period and the Mohammadian period. In addition, I will compare the present day practices of Hajj pilgrimage.

Shahada is ones’ declaration that “There is no god but the God (Allah) and Mohammed is the messenger of God”. This declaration confirms ones’ complete submission to God by means of acknowledgement of His message and religion revealed to humankind through the Prophet Mohammed. This affirmation of faith symbolizes a believer’s entrance into the Islamic community or ummah and is required when a non-Muslim submits to Islam. Salat or the five daily prayers symbolize a devoted Muslim’s submission to God. The five prayers are performed before sunrise, at noon, during mid-afternoon, during sunset and during the hour between sunset and midnight. The prayer position is directed toward Mecca, which has the House of the God, Ka’ba. Zakkat is almsgiving or involuntary charity. This is an individual act or duty
