The stamp act
My name is Bod hi Cooper and I was a 12 year old boy during the stamp act I am going to tell you a story about how it was like during this time. The British Parliment made a decision to install the Stamp Act on March 22, 1765 but it was not scheduled to take affect until November 1st of the same year. This gave colonist half a year to let the government know there opinion. A stamp duty was in place in britan since 1694. Im goin to tell you everything about the Stamp Act. The collection of the tax was a total faliure. The total amount raised 3,292 coing from Florida, Canada and the west Indies and f45 from Georgia. The tax was payable in gold in silver only and not in paper money as was the common method of payment in the colonies. More than one hundred thousands pounds worth of stamps was shipped to America. The signifinance of the Stamp Act was due to the fact that for the first time the tax was installed not to regulate commerce and trade.
But to directly squeeze money out of colonist. Moreover the tax was introduced by a direct order from England without approval of the colinal legislature. The passage of the Stamp act in british parliament can be considered a complete failure . After its introdution the British revenues from colines actually diminished. Colinal businesses refused to import the goods from Britan reducing the overall volume of trade and the base of collecting other taxes. The violations of the law in the colonies were so widespread that even courts would not inforce the use of stamps on legal documents .
