The kit was made by Hewlett Packard, a big company in Silicon Valley. Hewlett Packard made parts of computers. Steve called the company to complain. By the time they got off of the phone, Hewlett had offered Steve a summer job and promised him a bag full of machine parts. Steve joined Hewlett Packard explorer club. It offered lectures to kids interested in electronics. At one lecture, Steve saw a computer for the first time and he also met Steve Wozniak. Wozniak had an amazing talent for making things.
When Steve graduated from high school in 1972 he wanted to go to Reed College in Oregon but he couldn’t afford it. So Steve went to the Dean of Reed College and asked if he could live in the dorms and sit in the classes for free. He wouldn’t ever get a degree but he could learn about subjects he liked. The Dean agreed because he was impressed by Steve. A week later he was taking classes at Reed College. He took a job at Atari, his friend Steve Wozniak was already working there.
