A cerebral vascular accident also known as a stroke occurs when oxygen and other vital nutrients are cut off from the brain. Blood-flow to the brain ensures that there is a balance of nutrients throughout the human body.Strokes can result in permanent brain and physical damage. Brain cells die during strokes, which leads to impaired brain function. Many people suffer from strokes. A Temporary Ischemic Attack is the short term version of a stroke. This type of attack is not permanent. Strokes are very prevalent in our society. In the United States, more than 140,000 people die every year because of a stroke. A majority of the serious long-term disabilities in the United States are caused by stroke.(CDC, 2010) There are many factors that can …show more content…
The first reason has to do with the need to improve treatment for stroke patients. There are occupational therapy interventions designed to rehabilitate people who suffer from physical disabilities. There have been many medical breakthroughs thanks to the research conducted by scholars and professionals around the world. This research is also important because of how it can impact families and caregivers. When a family member suffers from the stroke, a lot of stress surfaces throughout that family. This has the potential to literally cause another stroke. High blood pressure is the leading risk factor of strokes, and can be caused by high levels of stress. Providing family members with proven cost effective interventions can ease the stress of the family …show more content…
Increasing the awareness of these interventions can help many people in the future. The final reason why this research is needed, has to deal with the timing of the treatment. Timing is very important in times of dealing with strokes. It is vital to seek treatment as soon as possible after suffering from a stroke. My research will focus on patients who have been receiving occupational therapy treatment post one year. “One year after the onset of the first stroke, physical independence (for 66% of the stroke survivors) and occupation (for 75% of the stroke survivors) are the most affected domains of handicap.”(Steultjens, Dekker, Bouter, Van de Nes, Cup, Van den Ende, 2003) It is important to understand the relationship between the timing of treatment, and the results of the treatment. Everyone's body works differently. This is why there are a lot of areas that need to be covered with health issues.
