Student Loans: Future or Failure?

When graduating seniors go off to college, they expect to be embarking on a journey of self-discovery as they chart the course for their future careers. Unfortunately, for most, this is not the case as they are saddled with mountains of debt on top of the preexisting rigors of higher education. In 2016, student debt reached a record-breaking $1.3 trillion dollars, a sum that restricts the financial freedom of both students and graduates and even has the possibility of deterring others from furthering their education. One thing that can be done is participating in a movement, such as the Occupy Colleges and Occupy Student Debt social media campaigns. These social platforms have a hand in multiple efforts to reduce student debt. For example, the Occupy Student Debt organization has collected more than 31,000 signatures on the White House’s “We the People” petition website (Hill). Another great example of an organization of improvement is the website studentdebtcrisis.org. This company is a “non-profit organization dedicated to fundamentally reforming student debt and higher education loan policies. Student Debt Crisis (SDC) takes a personal approach to member needs—working directly with borrowers to understand their challenges and fears, repayment obstacles and frustrations” (Abrams). SDC holds seminars, lectures, and other special events to help educate people on the current debt crisis, along with enforcing their belief that the nation’s success is dependent on an educated workforce that is capable of the skills needed to …show more content…
