Why is it that the United States of America is single handedly the most obese country in the world? What is it that draws a person to regulating a continuous intake of sugar? Sugar is a substance found in sugarcane and plants. Addiction is a habit that someone may develop over time if done continuously. Sugar addiction, a well-known enemy to American citizens, is the compulsive need for sugar (Paradowski, 2012). This addiction is overpowering, so much so that researchers have compared the withdrawal to drugs. Sugar can be dangerous and it is hidden behind some of America's most trusted foods. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also mention that safe weight loss is “...losing 1-2 pounds per week…cut roughly 500 calories a day...” Organizations like the American Hospital Association have conducted researches that conclude that 40% of Adult Americans in 2015-16 were obese. 6% of adults were severely obese. The majority of Americans that lose weight gain it back, making it a never ending cycle of weight loss and weight gain. PepsiCo’s products consist of brands many know such as: Starbucks, Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Lipton, Naked Juice, Propel, Pepsi, etc. A large portion of PepsiCo’s popularity comes from the way that it advertises. “Research has shown that the use of celebrity endorsements in marketing can enhance brand equity and the desirability of a product...”(pediatrics.org). While there are many ways that PepsiCo makes their products known to the public, one way that they advertise is through celebrities. The act of promoting products through celebrities is not new to the advertising business. There is a total of 23 artist endorsements with Pepsi and altogether they have a total of 160 million views on Youtube, not to mention the ads and the amount of times it is shown on television, billboards, buses, etc. However, PepsiCo claims to not advertise any of their beverages (other than the healthy choices) to “audiences projected to be more than 35 percent children under 12 (which applies to TV, radio, print, and internet)”
