In 10 European countries 168 high schools randomly was assigned with more than 11,000 students to provide one of three suicide prevention programs or no program at all (EdNewsDaily). The researchers compared the number of suicide attempts by students and suicidal thoughts after three months of having the programs in place and again after a year. At three months none of the programs showed major effect (EdNewsDaily). “After a year however, schools with the Youth Aware of Mental Health program had half as many suicide attempts and reports of suicidal ideation as the comparison schools with no intervention” (EdNewsDaily). The website states “In schools with the Youth Aware of Mental Health program, 14 students attempted suicide over the course of the year, and 15 students reported having suicidal thoughts. In the no-intervention schools, there were 34 suicide attempts and 31 reports of suicidal thoughts” EdNewsDaily. They need are help by caring enough to ask them if they are okay and listening to them. If a counselor or a teacher pay attention to that person that is suicidal can really help many. If they listen to that person it could actually make them change their mind. By an adult showing that they care about that student, that student will realise that they are an important part of that adult's life and not commit suicide. “Let the person know you really care. Talk about your feelings and ask about his or hers. Listen carefully to what they have to say.” (YouthSuicidePreventionProgram) In schools they should have suicide prevention programs because it could save a student's life. If that student goes to the suicide program and concentrate then it could turn out well. In school prevention programs they can help students change their mind by showing and telling them that they care and their is someone always out there that will listen, talk, and help you get through the hard times. Some students just need to be reminded that even though they are going through tough times they are wanted and they mean a lot to other
