Although, her father breaks this rule. He buries a bag of valuables in their backyard and makes sure that everyone in the family knows where it is. Her father talks about how it is impossible to know which family member will return at the end of this cruel war. Soon after they have to start wearing a yellow star as a form of identification. Elli was embarrassed to wear the star but her brother, Bubi, wore the star with honor.
When Ellis school closes down due to the war, she attends her last school function. At this function she starts talking to this boy. She mentions the sadness in his eyes when he sees that she is wearing a star. She never saw this little boy again, there was another law for Jews to follow. This one was strict laws that Jews were forbidden to talk to any Christians.
They go on like this for a while and it becomes more normal, all the officers walking around, watching them. Again, there is another change. All of the jews are forced to live in the ¨ghetto.” Elli talks about how there was no privacy in the ghetto and that everyone was crammed in. One by one people start running out of food and getting sent into labor camps. Everyone who remains are forced to walk long distances and at the end of this journey, they get shipped in a train to
