The teaching assistant might contribute to a lesson given to a group of 7 year old children learning to play percussion instruments by preparing the learning environment before the lesson. This might include making sure the area is clean and tidy and that tables and chairs are in the appropriate place, so that the area is a safe environment for the lesson to take place.

The teaching assistant might also prepare the percussion instruments by obtaining them, making sure they are in good working order, taking an inventory of them and setting them out for use. The teaching assistant should also familiarise themselves with the safe use of the instruments.

The teaching assistant might also be asked to prepare any learning materials required by the teacher, such as photocopies of worksheets or music.

During the lesson, the teaching assistant should encourage good behaviour and might be asked to record parts of the lesson or observe particular pupils and record their achievements.

Once the lesson is finished, the teaching assistant should return the learning environment to a clean, tidy state. They should ensure that all pupils return their instruments and check the condition of the instruments before returning them to storage.

The teaching assistant can promote good behaviour by praising positive behaviour and correcting poor behaviour. For example, thanking children for sitting still and listening to a story or asking a child to walk rather than run in a corridor.

The teaching assistant should use rewards and sanctions consistently so that children learn and understand the behaviour expected of them. The teaching assistant should help children to follow instructions and routines. Pupils should be encouraged to follow school and class rules. Teaching assistants should deal with poor behaviour or report it to the teacher.
