MY FAVORITE MOVIE
The moment Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street starts playing on the screen, I know exactly what the next scene will be. Number of movies I watched more than once is plenty, but Sweeney Todd is the only one that I can probably perform verbatim on my own.
During 7th grade, I attended a crowded public school that struggled to get enough funding. My school didn’t have enough teachers, so it was common to have about fifty students in one classroom. Especially English education was poor; I could barely read and write in English. In contrast, just two years later, my level of English was just fine to attend a high school where the first language is English, thanks to the entertainment industry.

The third time I watched it, the extent of emotions impressed me. I was trying to lift the veil slightly to see a different aspect; the plot no longer interested me. When the protagonist’s mouth twitched slightly, I saw anger and impatience in that twitch. The scared girl had wide open, frozen eyes with dilated pupils. Despite the revengeful and blood-thirsty characterization of the barber, the songs he sang in the movie made me picture a loving father who would do anything for his long lost daughter. As I was humming the songs, I realized I remembered easily many aspects of the English language through the songs that I didn’t know. That day, I got a notebook and wrote down the words and grammar I wasn’t familiar with to ask my English teacher. Later on, this became a habit. Since our class was very crowded, she couldn’t manage the class efficiently, but she helped me a lot by answering my questions. Maybe it was because of Johnny Depp’s faultless face, I was never bored with watching the movie frequently throughout the whole year. Step by step, I worked on the movie line by line. About a year later, it was just fine to watch the movie without Turkish subtitles. I was pretty good at interpreting what I hear, so I decided to work on my reading and writing abilities.
