Artificial tanning is not as healthy as some individuals are lead to believe. Although lack of vitamin D can be detrimental to the human body, UV light is not the best source. Supplements are the easiest way for someone to receive the recommended daily dose of vitamin D. Also changes to diet to include more vitamin rich food will help. The main cause of these cancers is exposure to ultra violet radiation. Indoor tanning beds can give off up to five times the radiation as opposed to the sun (Canadian Cancer Society, 2015). Studies have proven the link between indoor tanning and melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. In Canada it is estimated 5000 people are diagnosed annually with melanoma, with roughly 900 deaths attributed to it (Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation, 2015). Non-melanoma skin cancer is much more common but less lethal. Both types of cancer can be deadly and must be treated as so. However exposure to the sun can be unavoidable, going to a tanning salon is a person choice. Staying out of a tanning bed will at least reduce your chance of getting cancer and might save your
