The article “A Thank-You to Taylor Swift” by Laura Bates discusses the difference in behaviour between men and women in society, proving that raising them differently has a huge impact on their lives. A diversion in which both sexes are raised can be detected from a young age. Being surrounded in a society where we can see that men and women are not treated equally is one of the reasons why I chose to agree so strongly with this article. When we were young, we were raised to be perfect, little angels who are quiet and submissive - when speaking about the issue that happened to her daughter, Swift's mom commented; “As a parent, I questioned why I taught her to be so polite”. Even at school, young girls are implemented an extra set of rules. We are told that we have to follow a certain dress code so we don’t distract male teachers or the education of male students. Instead of teaching girls to not express themselves through their clothing, why don’t you teach men to be more respectful towards girls? If looking at a bra strap or exposed shoulders makes you feel aroused in any way, the problem is YOU. Not me. This kind of “we’ll penalize girls for your faults” treatment is what leads men to think that they are superior to women, as if we have to follow every single word and every single order they make. As a result, this behaviour becomes apparent in many sexual assault cases. And because women are taught to be quiet, they end up being afraid to speak up. According to SexAssault.ca, for every 100 cases of sexual assault, only 6 are reported to the police.
