Car crashes are the number one killer of teens in the United States. Teens are four times more likely to get into a car crash than adults are. This is because of lack of responsibility, lack of safety while driving, and lack of preparation before getting their license. Lack of preparation is the reason most teens get into car accidents while behind the wheel. There is not enough practice or time before a teenager is allowed to get behind the wheel by themselves. If all teens were more cautious about the consequences of driving at such a young age, there would be fewer accidents involving teenagers and overall safer drivers. Teens are proven to be less responsible behind the wheel by not wearing seatbelts, speeding, and overall reckless driving. In North Carolina, all 15-year old’s can take drivers education and get their learners permit. In my opinion, 15 years old is way too young to start driving. I am almost 17 years old now and still have my learners permit because I do not feel comfortable behind the wheel. Until I feel comfortable and safe behind the wheel, I will not obtain my license. Another way to prevent accidents while driving is to “eliminate or decrease the amount of distractions, such as cell phones, the radio, and friends talking in the car.” (Car Accident Prevention) Another huge way to prevent accidents, or the fatalities when driving is to wear your seatbelt.
