Studies have shown that people have died and sustained serious injuries from this simple but dangerous distraction. In 2011 4,432 pedestrians died and in 2013 4,109 died as well, more that 69,000 people alone in 2013 were injured for texting while walking. Thankfully in Honolulu, Hawaii on October 23, 2017 they took action in stopping more casualties. On Hotel Street at Fort Street Mall they passed a new law that allows law enforcement to fine any pedestrians using their phone. This fine can range from $15 to $99, because of Honolulu’s actions Montclair California has followed in their footsteps. In January of 2018 another law was passed of making it illegal to talk, text or have earbuds in while crossing streets in Montclair. If pedrastinas do not listen to their first warning they can be fined $100.
