In this case, the identified object of love is the love potion Alan used to win Diana’s affection. In the story, ‘The Chaser” by John Collier, Alan falls into the victim by the old man's persuasive suggestions of buying the potion and becomes fondly about the idea of what the outcome may be. Alan wasn’t aware of what he was getting into, but the old man surely was. Alan’s attempt at going to the old man’s office creates just a beginning of a soon facing tragedy and regret.
