The First World War which is also known as the Great War or the War to End All Wars originated in Europe and began on July 28, 1914 throughout November 18, 1918. World War One or The War to End All Wars lasted for about four years. The countries involved in the ‘War to End All Wars’ were Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria and the United States. “Militarism is a philosophy or system that places great importance on military power”(J. Llewellyn et al.) Militarism played a significant role in many European nations in the years prior to the war. It was made by General Count Alfred von Schlieffen in 1905. The Schlieffen Plan was the plan for an attack on France once Russia had started to mobilise troops near the German border. The plan was drawn up in 1897 and took nine year to compete, the plan was based on the theory that Germany would be at war with France and Russia at the same time.("The Outbreak of WW1") Although a war could have still have been avoided; as soon as Russia started to mobilize troops “leading figures in the German political and military ruling had decided that the long-predicted war with France and Russia had come.”(Grant, R. G.) This then led to Germany enacting the Schlieffen Plan which would invade through Belgium to get to France; Germany's invasion through Belgium would then lead to Britain’s involvement in the war. The Schlieffen plan would lead to Britain's involvement in the war in view of the fact that it had signed a treaty with Belgium, that they would support each other if one was attacked. The Schlieffen plan set in motion the full outbreak of the war with the triple alliance and the triple entente going to war.
