The Biggest Problem In America

“Jails and prisons are designed to break human beings to convert the population into specimens in a zoo-obedient to our keepers, but dangerous to each other” (Angela Davis). The prison system in the U.S.is not a good thing at all. There are a lot of problems with the prison system and the way it is. The U.S. prison system is corrupt, and two of the most important aspects to understand about it are The War on Drugs and Mandatory Minimums. One important aspect of the U.S.Prison system is the war on drugs. The war on drugs has to do with how big of a problem drugs are in the U.S. We need to open our eyes and see the real problem. prison system is Mandatory Minimums. Mandatory Minimums are when you have a minimum sentence, there is no way of changing it. It ruins second chances and early release. In “Williams Executed/last hours” (SF gate), the author states Stanley Tookie Williams was executed when he got the death penalty after being accused of four murders. Williams denied committing those crimes the whole time he was in prison and until his last breathe. Williams changed in prison, he began to turn his life around and he wrote childrens books.He was nominated for nobel prizes, but that did not change the sentence he had. The reason this is important is because Williams died, after he had changed and had become a better person. He got the death penalty at the beginning of this investigation because there was evidence linking him to four murders. People protested to take away the death penalty for Williams but the judge refused because of how many murders it was and the sentence he was required to have. In conclusion, another important aspect of the U.S. prison system is mandatory minimums. Mandatory minimums honestly should not be a thing because people change in prison and sometimes the crimes committed were not done harmfully but because they were needed.
