In this assignment, I am going to reflect on a critical incident which occurred whilst I was on my placement experience. I am going to discuss it in relation to respecting the service user as an individual, respecting diversity and promoting personal choice. Petty (2016) tells us that diversity means to accept the differences between individuals and to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their beliefs, cultures, background or lifestyle. Similarly, the Social Care Institute for Excellence (2013) states that diversity is about respecting individuals own way of life and respecting them as individuals. They state that everybody in practice should be treated equally, regardless of their position in society, their age, gender, race and ethnicity. This is an important statement as It states that everybody should be treated equally, therefore everybody in the prisons should have equal access to healthcare as those out of prison do. This meant that we as professionals did not see him as a prisoner, but as an individual who has rights and as an individual in society who needs care like everybody else. Similarly Brown (2015) states that people who commit crimes, need healthcare to, he states that we should see them the same as everyone else, not to condemn them. Because we have to treat everyone the same, we gave the patient the same advice on how to look after his wound, like we did with the other patients. For example we explained how he could lay in bed and get out of bed which would help prevent his wound from re-opening again. All of this relates to diversity as it shows we are understanding that he is a prisoner, yet we still provide him with the same advice and care as normal citizens.
