The farmers needed representation so the government would not mistreat them. The representation came in the form of the Populist Party. The government had tried to help farmers by giving farmers many different kinds of government aid. Such as coming out with farmer’s almanac this gave farmers information that has never been accessible to them in the past. Next, the government passed the home stead act of 1862, which provided 160 Acers of public land to any man or woman who paid the $10 filing fee, made some improvements on the land, built a house, and lived on the land for 5 years. With all of this happening the farmers created The Farmers Alliance began as a social organization that evolved into a political party. They wanted economic reforms such as graduated income tax, free coinage of silver to inflate the money supply and thus assist those in debt. They also pushed for lowered tariffs to decease the price of manufactured goods and supplies. The Farmers alliance pushed for the government to involve its self with more ordinary people to help them. From this in 1892 the populist party platform was formed their basis was what the farmers want free coinage of silver, progressive income tax, government ownership of railroads and telegraphs, and direct election of U.S senators. Farming changed from small substance to large commercial farming. Advances in transportation fixed the problems of receiving goods and distributing goods. Farmers and inventers created of mechanized planters, reapers and threshers to solve problems they faced and expedited the processes. The Farmers alliance was a very good representation of the mindset of farmers and the Populist Party portrayed the views of the farming population. Farmers over came economic problems, problems with farming techniques, and the Populist Party gave the views of the agriculture
