The life was bad because the ghetto of Warsaw was so overcrowded there were seven people per room. Most buildings that were overcrowded didn’t have the basic sanitary facilities. It was also the first ever urban uprising in the German occupied Europe. The uprising had inspired other uprisings including Bialystok, Mińsk, Treblinka, and Sobibór. After the uprising was over some individual Jews hiding continued to make attacks on the Nazis. (“Warsaw”)
For Around a month now the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto have been fighting for their lives. Most had died during the uprising, others were just killed in the streets. The ones who were left were sent to other camps.
“I decided to leave and was met by an unimaginable sight. The cellar, through which our shelter was reached, lay in ruins; the electricity and water-cut off. Through the holes in the walls one saw a sea of flames engulfing the nearby wings of the building from the top to bottom. Bilious smoke blocked out the sky, yet the light was as strong as day. The courtyard was covered in shards of glass, pieces of walls, furniture, and household utensils; it all amounted to a sight which is hard to describe, It was hard to any kind of parallel. I was no stranger to destruction, including the last days of the 1939 siege of Warsaw. But the present destruction surpassed anything I had ever seen.” -Baruch Goldman and Joseph
