Thomas Edison had done many great things in his lifetime, many of which are hard to believe. This short biography is just a glimpse of all the great and wonderful things he had donein his life. According to Bio. A&E Television networks on the biography website; Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11th 1847 in Milan Ohio and was the last of seven children. (para. 1) Early in Edison’s life he struggled with ear infections and also had a case of scarlet fever, which left him with hearing loss in both of his ears and he was almost deaf as an adult. (para. 6) In 1866, Edison moved to Louisville, Kentucky and worked the night shift for the associated press, which allowed him to spend most of his free time doing what he loved. (para. 8) However, as the telegraph technology advanced, receivers were added with a sounding key which allowed workers to read the messages by the sounds they made coming in, this left Edison with fewer and fewer job opportunities. (para. 8) Between 1868 and 1877 he achieved many great things, from conducting his first real invention of a stock ticker, to the phonograph, which recorded sound. (para. 9, 12) Those inventions and a couple of others led to his greatest invention of all, the light bulb. Not only that, but in that very same year he founded the “Edison Illuminating Company,” which later became the “General Electric Corporation.” (para. 13) In 1881, Edison left Menlo Park to begin establishing more facilities in other cities. (para. 13) His main facility was located in West Orange, New Jersey and that is where he spent the majority of his time overseeing the development of lighting technology; during this time he also developed the alkaline battery and motion picture camera. (para. 21) Edison was a true rags-to-riches hero in America and his success story has been told for generations. (para. 21) Something like getting pulled out of school at such a young age would seem like a terrible thing, but for Edison it ended up turning out for the better and helped him in the long run to come up with such great inventions. Without him and his perseverance and love for what he did, we would not be where we are today with things we take for granted. He gave us many things to help us grow and expand as a country as a whole. He had a few bumps down the road, but overall Thomas Edison lived a rather successful life and greatly contributed to things that no one could’ve imagined.
