Throughout the years, the flag has had many significant changes made by many flagmakers, but what do these various symbols mean? Every single component on the U.S. flag contains a deeper meaning than what we expect. The creation, symbolism, and history of the U.S. flag is an intriguing lesson that will be discussed within this report. The flag of the United States is not only a flag, but a symbol of hope; a symbol of freedom.

Many Americans believe that Betsy Ross was the ultimate creator of the U.S. Flag, but there are no records of her time indicating that she created the flag. Betsy Ross creating the flag is a legend that was passed by her grandson; the legitimate creator of the flag was Francis Hopkinson. On June 4, 1777 the idea to create a national flag was produced. Everything on our flag has a deeper meaning than what we expect. On the top left corner of the flag (also known as the union) there is a field of blue with 50 stars. The blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice, whilst the 50 stars contain two meanings. There are 50 stars on the flag which represent the 50 states, but the actual stars against the field of blue is called a constellation. The constellation symbolizes heaven and God and how he is the ultimate leader of our country. Next on the flag is the stripes. There are 13 stripes on the flag shown with the colors red and white. The colors red and white symbolize courage and purity, but why exactly are there 13 stripes? There are 13 stripes because they stand for the 13 original colonies, which are Georgia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virgina, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island.
