What is an Ulta beauty? What is their code of conduct? What is your reason for choosing Ulta? The beauty industry is one of the most influential markets today. Ulta Beauty is an all beauty retailer that sells makeup, skincare, haircare, and all beauty-related products. Being one of three of the biggest makeup retailers in the United States. Ulta takes their ethics seriously. Ulta has a 34-page document of their ethnic codes and rules that can be found on their website. I decided to choose Ulta Beauty for this project because I have researched their stock in the past and was curious to see how they handled the ethical side of business. Ulta’s code of conduct is a very thorough document that ensures that if employees don’t adhere to their code of conduct, they will be terminated. There’s even an ethics hotline number that customers can call to place a complaint. They also offer the phone number to the chief complaint officer. This shows that Ulta values their customers' experience when shopping at Ulta. They recently launched a program called “MUSE” to run their business off more renewable energy, putting fifty-million-dollars into the program. Ulta is putting the money and effort into making the world a more sustainable place. Based on their code of conduct, Ulta deserves an A, however, there are things that the public eye does not see. Their code of conduct can sound amazing and thought out, but the public does not know every manager and if they adhere to the ethical code of conduct or not. Are there forces at work in that industry that make it easier or harder to be ethical? The beauty industry is a very competitive industry. Especially for Ulta Beauty, as it is a main makeup retail competitor alongside Sephora and Sally’s Beauty Supply. In makeup production, there is makeup produced to be cruelty free and not cruelty free. Ulta sells all kinds of mainstream makeup brands that are cruelty-free and not. Ulta is not responsible for producing these makeup products but chooses to sell non cruelty free products. Customers can pick and choose which one they want according to their ethical needs. The makeup industry is also very wasteful as makeup expires after six months to 12 months. The public has a decently good understanding of how wasteful Ulta Beauty is with throwing out their makeup. There are all kinds of dumpster diving videos at Ulta showcasing hundreds of products being thrown out due to the expiration dates or products breaking in shipment. However, they cannot sell expired makeup, but the ethical economic factor still is in place. Being in the beauty industry makes it easier to be ethical because customers have multiple options when it comes to choosing which makeup brand to buy.
