Louie zamperini had a troubled childhood, but then he turned out to be an olympic runner, then to a war hero. When Louie was a child he started drinking and smoking at a young age. After Louie was motivated by Pete, his brother, he became a runner, and he soon became an olympic runner. After forced to join the war Louie was captured and was held captive with several other by the bird. In the book Unbroken, Laura Hillenbrand in my opinion is trying to show that Louie is capable and determined.
When Louie and two others were stranded at sea Louie was determined to stay alive and was determined to keep his mind sharp. In chapter 14 Louie and the others were struggling to stay alive, but it by talking to one another to keep their minds sharp “For Louie and Phil, the conversations kept their minds sharp”(114) this means that they will not go insane, and they will be saved before this happens. When Louie is on the raft, he had to stop phil’s bleeding “Louie knew he had to stop phil’s bleeding.”(103) this means that Louie had training to help people if they are wounded. In chapter 14, they caught a fish and they passed it around “They caught a fish and celebrated passing what they thought was Rickenbacker’s mark”(115) This shows that they were capable of catching a fish and getting food for themselves. In chapter 13, a bird landed on Louie and he was able to catch it “The bird pecked frantically, slashing louie's knuckles Louie grabbed its head and broke his neck.”(113) this demonstrates that Louie has what it takes to survive.
