Air enters the body through the nose (where it is filtered by hairs) and mouth during inspiration and travels through the pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchi to the bronchioles and alveoli in the lungs. A respiratory pause then occurs as carbon dioxide accumulates in the arteries and the levels of carbon dioxide trigger a message via the nervous system which signals the expiration of air. We typically take around 16-18 breathes per minute but this can slow to around 6-8 times a minute during relaxation exercises and meditation.
The circulatory system: consists of the heart, blood and blood vessels. The heart pumps blood through the body via the blood vessels. When oxygen enters the blood stream via the respiratory system, it is carried through the body via the circulatory system (blood vessels). Likewise, when nutrients and vitamins enter the blood stream via the digestive system and hormones via the endocrine system, they are carried through the body via the circulatory system, nourishing bodily tissues and carrying waste products away, which can subsequently be filtered out of the body via the lymphatic
