1. Personal susceptibility, self-efficacy, physician concerns and the self-help program are four components mentioned in the article that are important. The participant must feel like smoking is causing them more harm then good, which stated in the article “most ex-smoker quit due to health-related reasons” (Janz, et al., 1987). The participant must believe that they can change their behaviors to get the outcome, which would be a participant quits smoking. Also, most smokers mention that they would stop smoking if their physician urged them too, however due to physicians and their limited time, this is when the self-help program enhances their motivation in deciding to quit.
