Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to address the significance and impact of teen pregnancy. The impact of early pregnancy in adolescent females is a major, present-day, societal concern globally. Teenage pregnancy has a lot of social consequences which include increased risk for medical complications. Risk factors are imminent among pregnant adolescents. Substance abuse and addictive disorders are known factors, in relation to, teen pregnancy. Therefore, a teen’s emotional intelligence is a key component concerning pregnancy in adolescents. Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. In addition, interventions are mentioned to help decrease teenage pregnancy.

Key risk factors include drug and alcohol use, lack of knowledge about sex or contraception, lack of goals for the future, low self-esteem, poor school performance, having sex at a young age, being the victim of sexual abuse, and ambivalence about having a child. In addition, social risk factors are relevant and they consist of pressure from peers to have sex dating at an early age, dating older guys, friends who are sexually active and poor peer relationships. Lastly, family risk factors are also significant in teen pregnancies. These risk factors include poor parental supervision, limited communication between parents and teen, negative family interactions, single-parent families, significant unresolved conflict between family members, and a family history of teenage
