Vaccinations are a medical advancement that the United States often takes for granted. A vaccine is defined as a biological agent used to prevent very serious illnesses and diseases, such as smallpox, measles, influenza, tuberculosis, and hepatitis by injecting a weakened infectious organism into the human body. When vaccines are administered, our bodies instantly receive a boost of antibodies thus attacking the foreign invaders. This discovery led to drastically increasing the immune system to fight against harmful bacterias, viruses, and diseases. Without immunizations and vaccinations, our country would be drastically populated and contaminated with illnesses. A law requiring vaccines to be mandatory for all children in the United States, regardless of financial means or insurance, should be required to decrease diseases being spread and is what I am proposing. There are many questions parents have when the discussion of immunizations come to play. Which vaccines are safe, which ones are recommended and which ones are mandatory are often the most asked questions doctors receive on a regular basis. I believe this law should prohibit a child under the age of eighteen to make that decision. It is in the best interest for not only the child, but those around them to receive the necessary and life saving immunizations needed. According to scientificamerican.com, “We found that unvaccinated children were roughly 23 times more likely to develop whooping cough, nine times more likely to be infected with chickenpox, and 6.5 times more likely to be hospitalized with pneumonia or pneumococcal disease than vaccinated children from the same communities. Clearly, the parental decision to withhold vaccination places youngsters at greatly increased risk for potentially serious infectious diseases”
