“Every spring, a lamb’s ears are hole-punched, its tail is chopped off, and castrated without any painkillers. Male lambs are castrated when they are between 2 and 8 weeks old, either by making an incision and cutting their testicles out or with a rubber ring used to cut off blood supply—one of the most painful methods of castration possible. When the lambs’ testicles don’t fall off as expected, shearers often just cut off them with clippers. Every year, hundreds of lambs die before the age of 8 weeks from exposure or starvation, and mature sheep die every year from disease, lack of shelter, and neglect.” Along with this statement is a video of a sheep killed and left to die for wool.

Although it is commonly confused with vegetarianism, there are significant differences. Being a vegetarian means you do not consume animal flesh, but you may consume eggs or dairy. As previously stated, vegans avoid dairy and eggs, as well as fur, leather, wool, down, and cosmetics or chemical products tested on animals. When a survey was conducted with 10,000 people across England, Scotland, and Wales, the findings showed that at least 542,000 people in Britain are following veganism, which is an increase of over 350 percent in the last decade. The main increase is in people ages 15-34, making up 42 percent of vegans. Why has veganism increased so much? One reason is because of celebrities like P!NK who promote the vegan lifestyle. The main driving force is, unsurprisingly, social media. Many people, including myself, have learned about it through social media where it’s easy to find success stories. Veganism is commonly associated with weight loss and becoming healthier, but it may have many negative effects on your body as well. There is no “right” way for people to eat; everyone’s bodies are different. A common problem with veganism, however, is nutrient deficiency. Vitamin B12 is a vitamin that is involved in the function of every cell in the body. It’s vital and cannot be found in any plants, making it hard for vegans to get enough of unless they eat food supplemented with it. Vegans also lack animal …show more content…
You may not realize just how many products are actually derived from animals and their by-products. A few of these products are plastic bags, some rubber tires, some toothpastes, and certain types of shampoo and conditioner. However, it isn’t the decrease in sales that hurts us the most. What hurts us the most is the vegans who are strong advocates for an anti-meat industry. Many vegans try to push their lifestyle onto others, which also creates the stigma with veganism. As said before, social media is a huge driving force, and this is where vegans are most influential. It’s easy to put out propaganda about animal welfare on the internet and make it seem believable that ranchers are reckless and irresponsible with the treatment of their animals, even though they may not have a solid argument. Would you rather be called scrawny or slim? These words both mean the same thing, yet you have a negative feeling about one of them. PETA is an animal rights organization that continuously gains followers by wrongly putting out false information of ranchers. They’re also masters of using negative connotations of words, such as the ones I brought up in my introduction. As a sheep producer myself, I feel directly targeted by organizations such as these. I went into the sheep business when I was 9 years old, which has now turned into my FFA project. I care about
