The visual cortex is part of the neocortex in the occipital lobe. The left hemisphere receives and processes information from the right side field of vision, while the right hemisphere receives and processes information from the left side of the field of vision. There are two primary pathways in the visual cortex; the dorsal stream and the ventral stream. The first two regions of the visual cortex are called V1 and V2. These two are in what is called the striate cortex. The V1 analyzes orientation, retinal disparity, movement, and spatial frequency and color. V2 simply is a more in depth version of V1 and analyzes the same information. Now begins the ventral stream. This includes the V3+Vp which just further analyzes information from V2. Then …show more content…
Next up is the V4d and the V4v. This is where color constancy is processed. V4d processes for the lower visual field and the V4v processes the upper visual field. The V8 is next and this is the step responsible for color perception. Then LO, in the lateral occipital complex, is responsible for object recognition. The FFA is next and that is in the fusiform face area and this is where facial recognition occurs. The last two sections of the ventral stream are the parahippocampal place area (PPA) and the extrastriate body area (EGA). The PPA is the area in which recognition of a particular place happens, and the EBA is where the perception of body parts other than the face occurs. Next there is the dorsal stream. This consists first of the V7 which is where visual attention and control of eye movement occurs. Second, the MT/MST. These are in the medial temporal and the medial superior temporal region. Here is where motion is perceived. Then there is the lateral intraparietal area (LPI), which is also where visual attention is, and control of the saccadic eye movement. Next is the ventral intraparietal area (VIP), the anterior intraparietal area (AIP), the middle intraparietal area (MIP) and the caudal intraparietal area
