In the book, Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, the setting and weather symbolizes the characters’ mood and what obstacles they are going through. When a character is upset, sometimes the reader will notice a different personality of that character that they had not noticed before. A change in the setting affects the conflict and characters. It is both a good and bad thing because sometimes the characters could be upset because of something and that would affect the other character(s) to make them upset as well. Some people may think that Pi is just suffering through all of this stuff; weather, animals, and, again, himself. Another time that the author shows how Pi feels is when he is just lying and hanging out in the sun and has nothing to do. Pi is on the raft that he made and just sitting, having nothing to do. He tries to take his mind off of everything, and sleep but he can’t. The weather in this part of the story represents how Pi is feeling very alone and feels that he is just going to die. He is almost giving up on his life. He cannot take what is going on inside and outside of him. Pi then hears something and it is a turtle, he could just let it go, like his life, but instead, he goes and gets it, although it is hard, he manages to pull it aboard and have it. In the book, Life of Pi, the author relates many things that symbolized the character in many ways, especially their mood. There are many examples of this in the story that have affected me when I noticed them.
