According to Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, paragraphs 3-4, “Mistress, in teaching me the alphabet, had given me the inch, and no precaution could prevent me from taking the ell. When I was sent off errands, I always took my book with me, and by going one part of my errand quickly, I found time to get a lesson before my return.” Frederick never lost the motivation to attempt to continue reading and found his way around things to achieve his goal in education. Douglass would then use his intelligence to fight alongside other abolitionists after reading stories about abolitionists and determined slaves, and he would achieve this by setting himself off for freedom and writing about all the tragedies he had experienced and seen.
