What is a prison that millions of people visit each year? A zoo! People love visiting zoos and watching animals they could only dream of seeing in person. Zoos offer this opportunity for humans, but at a harsh price for the animals. Many animal cages have feces and urine all over the ground. In the wild animals would be able to get away from where they need to use the restroom and not have it in the cage with them. Many people believe that keeping endangered species in zoos helps the species regenerate its population. Sea world is a long way from helping its whales live longer. When animals are transported from Continent to Continent, climates are never the same. These animals are adapted to their climates back home not to …show more content…
According to Dunlap, animals are often crowded into small cages with a numerous amount of animals. Some species of animals are very spread out across terrain in the wild, when they are confined into small spaces they can become very angry or abusive (Dunlap 6). Many improvements have been made in exhibit designs, but the animals are still cramped into small dirty cages with no where to escape (Dunlap 6). An example of this was when a male whale named Tilikum was beginning training with older trained whales at Sealand using punishment. When Tilikum did not perform correctly, all whales were all withdrawn from food. This made the other whales furious with Tilikum, they would scrape him with their teeth causing him to bleed (Lewis 4).This means that when lots of animals who are not used to interacting with each other on a regular basis are forced together in a small area, animals can become aggressive. Animals are not used to being in such short quarters. Additionally, Dunlap states, animals are cramped into small, dirty cages. Imagine having 12 brothers and sisters living in one room (Dunlap 6). These animals are crammed into cages and sanctuaries with a numerous amount of other animals. This is important because lots of diseases can be spread from animal to animal. Being so close and confined to one another can cause diseases to spread extremely fast. Therefore, Keeping a numerous amount of animals in …show more content…
Kids love seeing their favorite animals in person. Some children may remember monkeys, elephants, or whales. One of my best memories as a child was watching the enormous whales at seaworld propel the trainers through the water as the trainers stood on the whales nose. At the end of the show out of no where came a whale, it flew out of the water and SPLASH! everyone in the stands was soaking wet! These shows were some of my best memories until I found out what goes on behind the scenes. Killer whales are recorded living from 80-100 years old, while in captivity, they are recorded only living to 25 years old. An orcas social group is based upon its family. These families communicate in different ways, when they are separated the whales suffer (Animal 2). Sealand Of the Pacific is an organization much like SeaWorld located in British Columbia. Here, a whale male named Tilikum was trained with punishment. When he did not perform a movement correctly, Tilikum and the other whales did not receive any food. Not only where the whales frustrated with each other, but they were also frustrated with the trainer. In 1992, a 20 year old part time trainer was killed when she slipped into the water with Tilikum (Lewis 5). SeaLand was shut down and Tilikum was moved to SeaWorld. One morning trainers found a man torn apart who had snuck into the pool for a swim with the whales after hours (Lewis 5). The deaths of these people show that keeping
