Character analysis: An-Mei An-Mei Hsu is shown as a very emotionally developed character. Her stories that she conveys from her past show the emotional distress that she went through shaping her perspective towards life. Apart from her charisma based of her past, An-Mei, based on the reader, is judged off her interaction with others. Her speech and diction show her personality. An-Mei is mostly illustrated through her childhood experience. The nature of An-Mei is created through her responses to Popo, whom we lean is a devious lady. The obedience level that An-Mei provided justified her attributes of a patient character. Not only her obedience, but her tolerance level showed how An-Mei suffered through the years, not knowing of her mother. An-Mei had forced herself to maintain the suffrage because this was the life she only knew of. Not only with the patience of dealing with Popo, but her experience with the nature of the situation also had impacted her as she described “cold hallways and …show more content…
The interactions with different characters in the novel can surrogate a reader’s opinion and impression about her. As from going to a lovable and understanding daughter, as to when she left her home for her mother, to a doubtful and questionable daughter, the readers would change their thoughts or input. When An-Mei receives a necklace, her mother tells her to quickly disregard of it. An-Mei feels as if her mother was thinking over the borderline and simply overreacting. After reading this An-Mei becomes a questionable character. Her charisma overpowers her mother’s commands leading to a resentful attack. After even after a day passing, An-Mei shows her independence. In the end An-Mei did care for mother as “this ghost mother should have caused no suffering to my mother” justifies it.
