In the short story, Lamb to the Slaughter, a pregnant wife is sitting at home waiting for her husband Patrick to come home. The woman, Mary Maloney is patiently waiting for Patrick to get home so they can enjoy a nice dinner out with each other. However when Patrick gets home, he announces that he is leaving his wife. Mary did not expect to be left all alone with a newborn child, she thought her and her husband's relationship was fine. The news that Patrick stated turned his once loving and caring wife into a crazed murderer. The author Roald Dahl tricks the reader with the actions of the wife Mary Maloney. At the beginning of the story any person would compare the couple, Patrick and Mary to any normal loving couple. Mary is sitting at home watching the clock wondering when her husband will get home.”As she bent over her sewing , she was curiously peaceful ”(1). Mary Maloney was a caring wife that would do anything to please her husband and didn't expect a thing in return. The woman patiently sits and waits for her husband, when Patrick finally gets home Mary rushes to the door to greet him with a kiss and take his coat.
