Why I Want To Teach ELL Students

Hello everyone! I am a middle grades major with a concentration/minor in ELA. I have had 200+ internship hours so far. I have seen many ELL students. Like mentioned in the article there are many Spanish speaking students. I have seen many instances where students are paired up with someone who speaks both languages well, such as English, and Spanish. Most of the time this leads to both students missing a lot of essential knowledge. This is a frustrating process because neither student succeeds at that point. I do not know what the right answer is yet in regard to teaching ELL students. I want to incorporate a lot of visuals/posters in my classroom. I enjoy watching my students grow, and succeed. They surprise me daily. Middle schoolers always keep you on your toes. When I was in middle school I fell in love with reading. I decided that I want to show others how to love reading also. I have so many friends who “hate” reading… but I know that they just have not found the right book yet. So many people are forced to read for displeasure during school, and they never get the chance to enjoy reading. I think that is very sad, therefore I am now aspiring to be the one to show them this love. A teacher is someone who is passionate, nurturing, knowledgeable and isn’t afraid to be a leader. Developing relationships with my students is my priority. I believe that if your students are not comfortable with you and your classroom, they are not going to acquire deep knowledge. I want to have a safe classroom, that encourages discussion. Discussion leads to a deeper understanding. In regard to ELL students; I want them to feel comfortable to engage in discussion. I do not want them to feel inferior because of an accent, or because they do not understand some vocabulary. I want everyone to be encouraging, and respectful of each
