The omens tell us what the universe or God wants us to know in order to fulfill our personal legend. The King gives Urim and Thummim to Santiago. These stones help read omens. Santiago only used these stones once throughout the whole story. The Alchemist also helped Santiago. He helps him connect with the soul of the world. He also helped Santiago realize what would happen to him if he did not follow his personal legend. The King and the Alchemist helped him speak with the world. Also, without him he would've married Fatima. If he would've married her he would've never found his treasure. If the Alchemist didn’t teach Santiago how to travel like the wind, he and Santiago would not have survived warlords. The Englishman is an important character in the book. He is considered as a foil character. Everything he taught Santiago were things that Santiago never knew. He is the one who introduced Santiago to the Alchemist. Santiago wanted to talk to the alchemist because he searches for his personal legend. However, the Englishman wanted to learn from the alchemist. He wants to learn to satisfy his greed. The Englishman thinks that the answers to all of his questions are in books. Unlike the Englishman, Santiago looks for omens in the desert. The Englishman never follows his heart. Santiago does follow
